1821 Coronation Medal in Gold, George IV. Obv. laureate bust in high relief, Rev. George IV on throne being crowned by Victory, before him standing Britannia, Hibernia & Scotia with INAUGURATUS DIE JULII XIX ANNO MDCCCXXI in exergue. [Eimer 1146, BHM 1070]. Cased with handwritten note:
"This medal by The King's command was delivered the 5 June 1823 to Andrew Dickie by Sir William Knighton Baronet at Carlton House, being a Present from His Majesty George IV as a token of His Royal Approbation of A Dickie's attention to the concerns of His Majesty's Privy Purse."
Andrew Dickie was the confidential clerk of Thomas Coutts who founded the banking house of Coutts & Co, and envoy to his Royal clients. Upon the death of Thomas Coutts in 1822, Andrew Dickie was promoted to Partner in the business. With his prior Royal connections we can only suppose that the management of the Privy Purse formed part of his duties as partner.
The medal exhibits multiple hairlines and has likely been cleaned at some point and a number of copper spots can be seen. This aside, the medal is in superb order and has clearly been little handled over the years. This medal was delivered to us on the 5th June 2023, some 200 years to the day that it was originally delivered to Mr. Dickie.
A truly special piece with connection directly to King George IV and therefore sure to be highly prized.
*** ADDED - The medal has a bent flan which has been additionally checked by notable members of the BNTA. There are no signs of this being post mint damage but are mentioned here for clarity and transparency ***
